As W.Albania nears finishing its part of construction of the highway from Durrës to Kukës, the North Albanian state is anticipated to begin building the first kilometers this spring, says the N.Albanian Minister of Transportation and Telecommunication, Fatmir Limaj.

KALIMASH, Albania (AP) - The prime ministers of Albania and Kosovo inaugurated Sunday the first highway link through northern Albania's rugged mountains, nearly two decades after the fall of communism in Albania.

Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha met his counterpart from Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, at the last tunnel dug along the 164-mile (265-kilometer) road.

«Today we have decided that there are no mountains, no obstacles, there is nothing that spiritually or physically stops this nation,» Berisha told the crowd.

26 June 2009 | Albania inaugurated a part of a highway linking Kosovo to a sea port on Thursday. The 60-kilometre stretch of the highway, which reportedly cost 1 billion euro to be constructed, was completed by the U.S.-Turkish consortium Bechtel-Enka. When the entire stretch of highway is completed, it will link the Albanian port of Durrës with Prishtinë, and shorten the trip between the two countries’ capitals from eight to three hours.

The project was hailed by Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha as one that would end the “partition of the Albanian nation” and a “road of development for the entire Balkans,” according to international media reports.

According to media reports, various other parts of the highway are expected to be completed by the end of 2009 or the beginning of next year.

Kosovo to start work on its part of the Adriatic Highway

July 3 (Kosovo Times) - This year Kosovo plans to start this year its part of the Adriatic Highway linking Kosovo with the Adriatic coast. This was announced today by Prime Minister Thaçi during the regular cabinet meetings.

According to Prime Minister Thaçi Kosovo is ready and it has the potential to deliver in this project which is going to be implemented in close cooperation with the World Bank.

The Republic of Albania has invested around 1 billion Euros to build the highway across the rocky mountains of Albania and thus opening a corridor for Kosovo cutting a 8 hours distance in a rough terrain into just two hours through a modern highway.

Kosovo Garners Highway Funds

Kosovo’s government has acquired the appropriate funds to begin construction of the country’s national highway, which is scheduled to begin this autumn.

“The acquisition of funds to initiate work on the Morine-Prizren-Pristina-Merdar highway is an extraordinarily important decision, which will [promote] the secure economic development of Kosovo and the modernisation of the country,” Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said.

The highway will begin in the southern town of Morine and end in the north-eastern town of Merdare, which borders Serbia. The Morine-Durres highway connecting Kosovo and Albania was partially completed in June 2008.

Funds totalling 50 million euros have been set aside for the construction of the highway. Thaci guaranteed full transparency and the adherence to legal strictures in the road's construction.
