TIRANA (AFP)--Polling stations closed on Sunday in Albanian parliamentary elections, seen as crucial for the European future of the Balkan country.

According to figures from a selection of towns across the country, turnout was between 40% and 45% at 1700 GMT, three hours before the polls closed, said the Central Electoral Commission.

Commission chairman Arben Ristani told reporters the vote had passed off normally.

"Small problems with basic material, like the lack of marker ink to make sure people do not vote twice, were quickly solved," Ristani said.

Some 3.1 million voters were to elect 140 parliamentary deputies for a four- year mandate in the election -- the seventh since the fall of communism in 1990s -- choosing among 4,000 candidates of 38 parties and coalitions.

Various surveys put Prime Minister Sali Berisha's Democrats and Edi Rama's opposition Socialists close in the polls, seen as key to the country's hopes of joining the European Union.

Preliminary results are expected on Monday.

Albania's parliamentary vote count delayed

TIRANA, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The vote count of Albania's parliamentary polls is still underway on Tuesday two days after the election, and the final results are not expected to come out in another two days.

The electoral commission is short of scanners to read the ballots, while election officials are still not very familiar with a new electoral system based on regional representation and electronic tallying, election officials said.

With nearly 74 percent of the vote counted, Prime Minister Sali Berisha's Democrats-led coalition won 71 seats in the 140-seat parliament, while the opposition Socialists-led coalition had 66 seats. The Socialist Integration coalition had three seats.

Albania: Democrats claim election victory

TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albania's governing Democrats claimed Wednesday they won weekend parliamentary elections. Democratic Party spokeswoman Majlinda Bregu said Berisha won 71 of the house's 140 seats and could govern without forming a coalition. Bregu asked election authorities to "confirm the victory of the Democratic Party."

New coalition to work for Albania's EU integration

TIRANA, Albania -- Prime Minister Sali Berisha said on Tuesday (July 14th) the proposed coalition between his Democratic Party and the Socialist Party for Integration will work for Albania's EU accession. "The agreed partnership didn't aim to keep us in power, but to integrate Albania into Europe," he stressed.

The coalition has set a precedent in Albanian politics as two fierce rivals from different ends of the political spectrum joined forces to govern.

Berisha also accused main opposition Socialist Party leader Edi Rama of contesting the vote-counting process rather than accepting defeat in the June 28th elections.
