LONDON -- The IMF voted Tuesday to make Kosovo a member. Membership in the fund will give the new state important access to additional economic aid as well as some reassurance for potential investors, the government says.

WASHINGTON (AFP)--The International Monetary Fund said Friday it is offering membership to Kosovo, which would become the 186th member of the financial body.

"The Republic of Kosovo will become a member of the IMF when its authorized representative signs the IMF's Articles of Agreement," the statement said.

Kosovo is now formally a full member of the most important world financial intergovernmental organizations since President Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi signed the Articles of Agreement of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development(the World Bank) on behalf of Kosovo at the State Department in Washington.

Government of Kosovo will also sign the constituent instruments of two other financial institutions in the World Bank Group, the International Finance Corporation and the International Development Agency. In the same context Kosovo will join as a party the Convention establishing the Multilateral Investment Guaranty Agency(MIGA) and the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes(ICSID).
